MOZART

From Arts and Entertainment’s Award-Winning “Biography” Series

Mozart’s music, a product of his rebellious genius, revolutionized nearly every area of music.  Performances by some of the world’s most famous musicians, including conductor Zubin Mehta, violinist Isaac Stern and flutist James Galway, demonstrate why many consider Mozart’s sudden death at age 35 one of music’s greatest tragedies.

CLASSICAL VIENNA: MOZART DROPPING THE PATRON

From the “Man and Music” Series

Unwilling to submit his genius to aristocratic servitude, Mozart at the age of 25 quit
his safe post as composer/musician to the Archbishop of Salzburg, broke with
his domineering father, and headed for the big city of Vienna to become a free-lance musician—a perilous move in a culture governed by a strict social order.
How did he fare after “Dropping the Patron”?
Music includes excerpts from a wind serenade, a violin sonata, a string quartet, and a piano concerto, and the opera The Marriage of Figaro, all performed with historic instruments.

 AMADEUS

Winner of Eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture

As much fiction as fact, but great fun nonetheless, this extravagantly costumed production of Peter Shaffer’s London and Broadway stage hit views Mozart’s life and genius through the eyes of his arch-rival at the Viennese court, Antonio Salieri.  Animal House’s Tom Hulce stars as a raucous Mozart, and F. Murray Abraham plays the jealousy-ridden Salieri (Oscar for Best Actor).   The incredible music of Mozart is heard throughout the film, including lavishly staged excerpts from Mozart’s operas.  Directed by Milos Forman and produced by Saul Zaentz.
